Key takeaway

What memory stones are, how engraved granite remembrance stones differ from headstones, what they cost, and how families use them in gardens and cemeteries.

Memory stones are engraved stones placed in remembrance of a person or pet. They range from small river stones with a single name to substantial polished granite markers set in a memorial garden. This guide covers the types of memory stones, what they cost, and how they fit alongside urns and columbarium niches.

What Counts as a Memory Stone

The term covers several different memorial objects:

  • Garden memory stones: flat or boulder-style stones engraved with a name, dates, or a short verse, placed in a home garden
  • Cemetery accent stones: smaller engraved stones placed at a grave in addition to the main headstone
  • Columbarium remembrance stones: engraved granite elements placed near a niche when the ashes rest elsewhere
  • Pet memory stones: compact engraved markers for a beloved animal

Why Granite Is the Standard

River rocks and cast concrete stones weather quickly: paint fades, concrete spalls, and shallow engraving fills with grime. Granite does not rust, rot, or fade in sun. A polished granite face still reads clearly after decades of rain, which is why every memorial we supply — from a $375 cremation urn to a $122,052 family columbarium — is cut from high-density granite.

Engraving Choices

Names and dates are the starting point. Laser and sandblast engraving also reproduce line art, religious emblems, flowers, and even portraits on polished granite. Darker stones such as Indian Black Premium give the strongest contrast for fine detail; lighter stones like Impala Gray or Morning Rose read best with deeper, bolder lettering.

What Memory Stones Cost

Small engraved garden stones are the most affordable memorial you can buy — typically well under the cost of any monument. For context from our own published price list: granite cemetery vases run $143 to $526, engraved granite cremation urns are $375, and full columbarium monuments start at $5,260. A custom memory stone is quoted by size, stone color, and engraving time, so send us the wording and we will price it the same day when possible.

Memory Stones vs. Headstones vs. Urns

A headstone marks a burial and is regulated by the cemetery. An urn holds ashes. A memory stone is free of both constraints: it can sit anywhere, hold nothing, and simply carry a name. Many families choose a granite urn for the ashes and a matching memory stone for the garden, cut from the same stone so the two belong together.

Ordering a Custom Memory Stone

Granite’s durability is not a marketing line: as an igneous rock composed mainly of quartz and feldspar (granite — Wikipedia), it is harder than marble or limestone and resists the freeze–thaw and acid-rain weathering that erodes softer memorial stones.

From Our Studio

Our memory stones are supplied from the same granite as our columbaria, which is why color match across a family plot is possible years later — we log the quarry lot of every order. A standard laser-etched portrait on black granite holds detail at 300+ dpi; sandblasted lettering is engraved to a minimum 3/8 inch depth so it stays legible after decades of weathering.

We engrave and supply from our Los Angeles studio at 5916 Santa Monica Blvd, and we ship nationwide. Tell us the name, the dates, the words you want, and where the stone will live — sun, shade, lawn, or gravel — and we will recommend a granite and a finish that will hold the inscription for generations.
