Custom Columbarium Design: From First Sketch to Installed Monument

July 5, 2026 8 min read

Catalog monuments fit most families. But churches, cemeteries, and estates often need something the catalog cannot give: a specific niche count, a footprint that fits an existing courtyard, a roofline that echoes the chapel behind it. That is custom columbarium design, and this is how we do it as the maker — not a broker passing sketches to a factory overseas.

Where Every Custom Project Starts

Three questions decide 80% of the design:

  • How many niches — now and in twenty years? The best investments plan for 10 to 20 years of projected need
  • Where will it stand? Footprint, access, grade, and what the monument will be seen against
  • Who is it for? A family estate unit reads differently from a congregation's memorial wall

Designing in 3D Before Cutting in Stone

Every custom columbarium we build is drawn in 3D first, placed over a photograph of the actual site, with real granite textures and your inscriptions in place. The preview is free and includes two free revisions. Granite is unforgiving — the drawing is where changes are cheap.

Granite, Form, and Detail

Custom work opens the full architectural vocabulary: gabled and serpentine caps, arched tops, columns, cornices, benches, and two-tone stone combinations. We stock nine granites — from Carrara White to Indian Black Premium — and can source more for a specific match, including matching an existing older wall from photos and a stone name.

Engineering the Cemetery Board Will Accept

A custom design is only buildable if it is approvable. We supply footprint drawings, total weight, foundation specification, and anchoring details — the load data site owners need for their permit. We have prepared these packets many times and know what a cemetery board expects to see.

What Custom Work Costs

Custom pricing brackets to the catalog. Our published range runs from a $5,260 two-niche unit to a $122,052 twelve-niche estate monument; a custom design of similar scale lands in similar territory, plus design-specific stonework. You receive one itemized quote covering stone, engraving, freight, and installation — and a price-match guarantee against any comparable written offer.

Timeline

Custom columbarium projects run three to six months from approved drawing to installed monument. One person stays on your file the entire way; ask for the project desk if the job is a wall rather than a single unit.
